The so called Wohnstadt Carl Legien was built by Bruno Taut and Franz Hillinger in 1929 - 1930. The brief of the Berlin senate had called for a high-density residential development with five-storey buildings owing to the high cost of land, the estate being located near the city centre.

Urban Living In 1928, construction began on the Carl Legien Housing Estate in north-east Berlin, situated just outside the S-Bahn commuter train ring and not far from Alexanderplatz. But the stiff price of this central property and the ensuing global economic crisis forced the city to save money.

Four of the estates, located in West Berlin after WWII (Britz, Schillerpark, Weisse Stadt and Siemensstadt) have been modernised, whereas those in East Berlin haven't (Gartenstadt Falkenberg and Wohnstadt Carl Legien). It didn't really appeal to us before we saw it, and that feeling didn't change… It also isn't impressive, beautiful or exceptional in any way, except maybe for its historical relevance.

Benannt wurde sie nach dem deutschen Gewerkschaftsführer Carl Legien.
